At the start of the “–er” months, I always find myself standing in front of my closet — sweating, but somehow still tempted by hoodies and Uggs. It’s that confusing time when mother nature can’t make up her mind, and we’re all just trying to dress for her mood swings.
We’re clearly past shorts and tank tops, but not quite ready for sweaters and scarves. The stretch between summer and fall is… tricky, to say the least. But it’s also one of my favorite dressing windows — that fleeting moment when you can mix and match pieces that only make sense right now. Think: shorts with a pullover, a midi skirt with a tee, or leggings with a trench — you get the idea.
Here are a few outfits I’ve worn in the past few weeks, as the temperatures have slowly dropped with the leaves:
What I’ve Been Wearing Lately
I’ve been gravitating toward long bottoms— jeans, longer skirts, leggings — and pairing them with something lighter on top: a tank, a linen shirt, a thin button-up. It’s that in-between balance that keeps me from overheating by noon but still feels a little “fall”.
Because let’s be honest, if you live in the South, “fall” is really just summer with a breeze.
Accessory Swaps
Accessories are another way to make the subtle transition to a new season. As we left August, I traded in a few things:
My basket weave bag for a black leather one
Dark-tint sunglasses for light ones I can wear indoors and at night (perfect for overcast fall days)
Sandals for loafers
A French tip to a brown cat-eye manicure
Makeup Swaps
If you were wondering — yes, you should transition your skincare and makeup routine for the season. The colors, textures, and finishes that work in July don’t always hit the same in October. As the weather shifts, so should the items on your vanity.
Instead of using the Danessa Myricks Water Powder Serum to keep my face dry against heat and humidity, I switch to her Glow Serum — it keeps me lightly mattified with a soft, moisturizing glow.
I swap my Chanel Les Beiges bronzer, which is fairly sheer, for the Makeup by Mario Cream Bronzer Shaping Stick, something a bit warmer and more opaque.
Summer’s blush is about brightness and looking fresh; fall is about warmth and depth. So I trade my Kosas blush in Butterfly for the Rare Beauty Luminous Powder Blush in Love — a gorgeous terracotta.
These are just a few of the ways I’m slowly transitioning my wardrobe and makeup routine. I’ve also begun picking up pieces here and there to add to my fall/winter closet. Next time I share another beauty or fashion post, I’ll include an updated makeup routine with a peek at some of the gorgeous items I’ve snagged — everything from a butter-yellow barn jacket (drool) to black leather knee-high boots and a vintage Ralph Lauren cardigan I’m truly obsessed with.
Here’s to a new season of rediscovering what feels good — in clothes, in makeup, and in your own skin.
In the middle, with love,
— KSH
